A granite memorial stele in Le Thi Rieng Cultural Park, inaugurated in 2005

Good to know before you go: since 22 June 2026, part of Le Thi Rieng Cultural Park has been fenced off, including the entrance to the heritage house right next to the memorial stele area. There has been no announcement on whether the stele area lies within the fenced zone, so if you plan to visit, ask in advance. The rest of the park remains open as usual. The memorial stele to the late General Secretary Tran Phu, the first General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, stands within the park grounds. This is also the very place where the Party, the State and his family found his grave on 4 January 1999, after nearly 68 years, before bringing his remains home to rest in Duc Tho, Ha Tinh. Construction began in 2004 to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth, carried out by the Party Committee, authorities and people of District 10, and the memorial was inaugurated in 2005 with an investment of over 2 billion VND. Its four main components are the approach path, the ceremonial yard, the park path and the memorial stele. On the monolithic granite stele, his portrait is carved in relief on a block shaped like the Party flag, together with the saying that has inspired generations: "Keep firm the will to fight". Tran Phu was born on 1 May 1904 in An Tho citadel, Tuy An prefecture, Phu Yen province; his ancestral home was Tung Sinh village, now part of Tung Anh commune, Duc Tho district, Ha Tinh. He came from a patriotic Confucian scholar family. In 1922 he came first in the Thanh Chung examination but, rather than becoming an official, he taught at Cao Xuan Duc Primary School in Vinh, where he was renowned as a gifted, caring teacher – and where his revolutionary path began. The "Political Thesis" he drafted was adopted at the Central Committee Conference in October 1930, at which he was also elected the Party's first General Secretary. The park also has a cluster of other cultural works close together: the Memorial Stele to Martyrs Le Thi Rieng and Tran Van Kieu, the District 10 Martyrs' Roll of Honour House and the District 10 Heritage House. This is the opening stop of the "District 10 – Where History Left Its Mark" heritage tourism product.
