Thousands of objects retelling the story of Ba Ria – Vung Tau from prehistoric and protohistoric times to the present day.

History and development The Ba Ria – Vung Tau Museum was founded on 11 February 1991 through the merger of the Museum of Scenic Landmarks and the Museum of the Vung Tau – Con Dao Special Zone. On 16 January 1992 it took the name General Museum of Ba Ria – Vung Tau, and from 1995 it became the Ba Ria – Vung Tau Provincial Museum. The present building was begun in 2011, completed in 2015 and opened to visitors in July 2020. Designed by Dr Do Anh Dung, architect, it takes the shape of a ship facing the sea, in keeping with the maritime culture of the region. Collection and displays The permanent display holds more than 2,500 original objects and images presenting the natural history, culture and people of Ba Ria – Vung Tau from prehistoric and protohistoric times to today. The first floor introduces nature, the inhabitants, archaeological traces and the clearing and settling of the land from the 17th century. The second floor focuses on the resistance wars against France and the United States, with objects, photographs and models linked to Con Dao, the Long Phuoc tunnels, Minh Dam and Binh Gia. The third floor presents development after 1975 and the collection of antiquities salvaged from the waters off Ba Ria – Vung Tau. Highlights - Ship-shaped architecture: the building is designed as a white ship reaching out to sea, giving it a character of its own and recalling the maritime standing of the region. - Antiquities from the sea: the display space is shaped like the hold of a boat, where eight collections of antiquities salvaged from the waters off Ba Ria – Vung Tau tell the story of seaborne trade in the past. - A visit underground: the Long Phuoc tunnels have been recreated at 1:1 scale, reproducing the tunnel system that local troops and residents used during the war against the United States.
