A monument park at the Cach Mang Thang Tam – Nguyen Dinh Chieu intersection, commemorating Most Venerable Thich Quang Duc
At the intersection of Cach Mang Thang Tam and Nguyen Dinh Chieu streets, the Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc Monument Park is a memorial to Most Venerable Thich Quang Duc (1897 – 1963). Construction began in late 2007 and the park was inaugurated on 18 September 2010. The grounds include a bronze-alloy monument about 6 m tall, bronze reliefs, a ceremonial courtyard, walking paths, a lotus pond, trees and lawns; the park is illuminated at night. The statue and reliefs were created by sculptors Vo Cong Chien and Vo Cong Thang. Most Venerable Thich Quang Duc, born Nguyen Van Kiet in Van Ninh, Khanh Hoa, entered monastic life at the age of 7. During his years of practice, he built and restored more than 31 pagodas in Central and Southern Vietnam; the last pagoda where he served as abbot was Quan The Am Pagoda, now on Thich Quang Duc Street in Phu Nhuan. The park is a place where locals and visitors come to offer incense and pay their respects. Visitors are asked to maintain a solemn atmosphere.
