A stone pier built from 1873 in front of the Island Governor's Palace, the first place prisoners set foot on Con Dao

Pier 914 lies directly in front of the Island Governor's Palace, facing out onto Con Son Bay; the two relic sites face each other across Ton Duc Thang Street. The pier is part of a Special National Relic Site, recognised by the Prime Minister under Decision No. 548/QD-TTg dated 10 May 2012. Construction of the pier began in 1873, and it has undergone many repairs and extensions. What remains as a mark of time are the stone blocks, each a cubic metre in size and weighing several tonnes, stacked layer upon layer. The number 914 in its name is symbolic, commemorating the prisoners who died during its construction. This was also the first place prisoners set foot when they were brought to Con Dao. The pier witnessed historic moments for Con Dao: covered in flags on the success of the August Revolution in 1945 and on the day the country was fully liberated in 1975, when thousands of prisoners were freed and returned to the mainland. The pier is one stop on Con Dao's signature sightseeing route: Museum – Island Governor's House – Pier 914 – Cong Quan House – Phu Hai Camp – French Tiger Cages – American Tiger Cages. From here it is only about a 5-minute walk to Phu Hai and Phu Son camps. Right next to it is the Con Son Bay beach, with flat sand, gentle waves and clear water – a pleasant place for a seaside stroll.
