A historical site at Saigon's southwestern gateway, linked to the 1948 battle against an enemy sweep operation, with a place name inspired by whistling ducks and storks
The name Lang Le – Bau Co tells the story of the land before it tells the story of its history. In the old days, the area southwest of Cho Lon was a dense web of rivers and canals with "lang" and "bau" (marshes and ponds) teeming with fish and shrimp, where whistling ducks (le le), storks (co) and herons came to live and feed. As the saying goes, birds settle where the land is good: people came to clear the land, settled here and called the area Lang Le – Bau Co. It later also became known as the "Tam Tan" area, comprising the three communes of Tan Kien, Tan Tao and Tan Nhut. The area belonged to the Vuon Thom base, right at the southwestern gateway of Saigon – Cho Lon. On 15 April 1948, Regiments 308 – Nguyen An Ninh, 306 – Pham Hong Thai and 312, together with the National Guard and the Trung Huyen militia and guerrillas, repelled several major attacks, protecting the base of the Cho Lon Provincial Party Committee and the Resistance and Administrative Committee of Saigon – Cho Lon – Gia Dinh. The 1948 Battle of Lang Le – Bau Co became a model engagement of guerrilla tactics in the early years of the resistance in Southern Vietnam. On 14 October 1966, the site witnessed another victory, won by Company 2, Binh Tan Battalion 6. In 1988, the Binh Chanh District Party Committee decided to build a memorial site covering about 10,000 m², including a tradition house, a Victory monument, a stele house and memorial steles. On 5 August 2003, the site was recognised as a City-level historical relic, and in 2013 it underwent a major restoration with upgraded exhibits. In October 2025, the City's cultural sector held a conference proposing that the site be upgraded to a National historical relic. Here, visitors can burn incense before the monument to fallen soldiers and learn about the history of the resistance in the tradition exhibition house. Note: this historical site is different from the nearby Lang Le Cultural Park.
