The name comes from the sleeping-mat weaving trade practised on this once-wild land since 1815

Located on Dinh Le Street, Xom Chieu Ward, Ho Chi Minh City. According to Tuoi Tre newspaper, the name "Xom Chieu" (Mat Weavers' Hamlet) comes from the craft of weaving sleeping mats: this land was originally wild marshland, and the inhabitants used the grasses and plants at hand to weave mats, gradually forming a craft hamlet. The name already appears on maps from 1815. Xom Chieu Parish was founded in 1856 and is almost 170 years old; by 1861 it had about 2,000 parishioners. The present church is the fourth building on this plot, erected around 1922 after the French authorities repossessed the old church land to expand the port. It blends French and Japanese architectural styles, stands 30 metres tall and has a floor area of 500 square metres. Today, the Xom Chieu night market (roughly 4pm to 11pm) is where brackish-water seafood from Nha Be and Can Gio comes together with mixed hu tieu noodles, balut duck eggs and bo bia rolls, all in the working-class atmosphere typical of the former District 4.
