Asia's largest statue of Christ (2012)

The Christ the King Statue, standing atop Tao Phung Mountain, was begun in 1974 and completed in 1994, and has long been a striking symbol of Vung Tau. The 32 m monument rises from a pedestal carved in relief with Christ and the 12 Apostles, its arms spread 18.4 m wide and facing straight out to the East Sea. Thanks to its impressive scale, it once held the record as the largest statue of Christ in Vietnam (2006) and the largest in Asia (2012). Although Western in architectural style, the statue still blends into its natural surroundings and has become a distinctive religious landmark visible from many parts of the city. The most remarkable highlight is the experience of stepping out onto the statue's outstretched arms, dozens of metres above the ground. From this one-of-a-kind vantage point, visitors can take in the full beauty of Vung Tau from above: windswept Nghinh Phong Cape, Hon Ba islet sitting amid the waves and the Vung Tau Lighthouse on the summit opposite. To reach that moment, visitors climb the stone steps winding around the slope of Small Mountain (Nui Nho) and then continue up the spiral staircase inside the statue. This is without doubt the most impressive sightseeing experience not to be missed in this seaside city.
