A pagoda over a century old in An Phu Dong, once a revolutionary base, now famous for scenery likened to a "miniature Japan"

Set on more than 6,000 m² of land in An Phu Dong Ward, Khanh An Monastery – formerly Khanh An Pagoda, and known locally as "Thay Nam Phan Pagoda" – is often likened to a "miniature Japan" in the heart of the City thanks to its multi-tiered roofs amid greenery. According to the monastery, it was built in the style of ancient Vietnamese Mahayana (Northern school) Buddhist pagodas; its present appearance was completed in 2016. The pagoda began as a small hermitage founded in the early 20th century by Venerable Thich Tri Hien (Thay Nam Phan) on land donated by Mr. Bien Luc. From 1939 to 1947, the pagoda served as a meeting place and base for the revolutionary movement in the An Phu Dong area; in 2007, Khanh An Pagoda was classified as a City-level Historical Relic. In 2010, it was renamed Khanh An Monastery. Today, the monastery attracts many visitors and young people who come to worship, sightsee and join retreats and meditation, notably the regularly held "Mindful Living" retreat. The monastery is part of the "District 12 – So Much More to Discover" programme, together with the An Phu Dong War Zone Heritage House. When visiting, please dress modestly and keep quiet.
