The temple of the arts of Ho Chi Minh City

The Ho Chi Minh City Opera House, also known as the Municipal Theatre, is one of Saigon's most emblematic works of architectural art. Built from 1898 and inaugurated in 1900, it bears the strong imprint of late 19th-century European architecture, with an elaborate facade, numerous bas-reliefs, ornamental motifs and decorative lines inspired by the French theatres of the day. In its early years the building mainly hosted opera and stage productions for the upper class. In 1943 many of the facade's bas-reliefs were removed during renovation work. From 1954 to 1975 it served as the seat of the Lower House (of the Republic of Vietnam government), before returning to its role as a performance venue after 1975. These changes of function have made the opera house a singular witness to the urban history of Saigon. Today the theatre remains a professional performing arts venue, closely tied to the Ho Chi Minh City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO). Symphony concerts, opera, ballet, musical theatre and contemporary works are staged here, creating a meeting point between French architectural heritage and modern artistic life. The Municipal Theatre is therefore not only an architectural highlight of central Saigon but also a cultural and artistic symbol of Ho Chi Minh City.
